One of the Wonders of the World, the Shwedagon is believed to have been built more than 2500 years ago to enshrine a few strands of the Buddha's hair. Towering almost 100 metres (99.4 metres/326 feet) above the green city-scape of Yangon, the Shwedagon is visible from miles around. this golden symbol of the faith of a people is a place that never fails to enchant.
The Kaba Aye pagoda was built in 1952 and dedicated to "World Peace". Within the vast compound of the pagoda are the Maha Pasana Cave where the Sixth World Buddhist Council was held and the Buddhist Museum with its collection of palm-leaf manuscripts, Buddha figures and other articles of religious significance. This huge reclining Buddha (70 metres long) which lies within the compound of the Chauk Htat Gyi monastery complex on Shwegondaing road draws a regular stream of worshippers.
Serenely occupying its concrete island amid the busiest sector of the city, this pagoda is said to have been built over 2000 years ago. Apart from being a holy place, this pagoda forms a picturesque traffic island.
