Wat
Thar Dote Htoe
Wat
Thar Dote Htoe means pork skewered on a stick. Pork meat and innards
are boiled and marinated with cooked sauce made of special spices.
The pork is then cut into small pieces and threaded on small sticks
or toothpicks. The seller keeps the sauce at boiling point so that
it remains hot and the pork pieces are dipped into the sauce before
one eats. This dish is not a traditional Myanmar food and it became
popular just a couple of decades ago. It seems to be a variant of
Chinese food and is sold mainly in China town. It is, however, so
popular now that it is sold throughout the city by small street vendors.
One will be able to see wat thar dote htoe vendors near schools and
universities as well. In China town, there are all night Wat Thar
Dote Htoe stalls where you see people enjoying this snack at all odd
hours.
Wat
Thar Dote Htoe is sold by piece and the customers hold on to the sticks
that held the meat and when they are done, they pay for the total
number of sticks in their hands. This food is very addictive and those
who like this cannot stop eating once they start. The sauce, which
is sweet and spicy, is what gives flavor to the wat thar dote htoe
and the red chili sauce it dips into is also important. Many people
like to eat this accompanied by green chili and raw garlic. Wat thar
dote htoe looks very appetizing as meat and other delicacies of pork
are prepared and piled high on one section of a big basket, while
from the other section steam rises from the boiling sauce. Few aficionados
can resist the sight of such a roadside stall even if it means sitting
on tiny stools to enjoy their favorite snack.
