Bamboo Shoots

Mhyit : There are many different species of bamboo, not all edible. The inside of the shoots is used as food after the tough outer leaves have been removed. Fermented bamboo shoot with meat dish is polular in Myanmar.


Banana Flower

Nga-pyaw-hpu : In Myanmar, slices of tender banana flower are eaten raw with the pungent dip known as nga pe yay or mixed in a salad.


Banana Heart

Nga-pyaw-ou : A banana plant is used for more than just its fruit. Its flowers, leaves and trunk are also important in the cuisines of Myanmar. The heart of the main stem is used in famous national dish called Moh Hin Gha. The tender inner portion of the trunk can be boiled and eaten as dipper- toh sayar.


Banana Leaves

Nga-pyaw-ywat : Banana leaves can be used by baking or steaming food such as marinated chicken breasts, as well as tamales. To use the leaves, remove the hard center rib of the leaf if present.


Basil

Pin-sane-ywat : Ocimum canum : This herb has a very aromatic and spicy flavor and is a necessary for fresh ah thoke.


Bitter Melon

Kyat-Hin-Kha-tee : This bumpy-skinned vegetable is bitter in taste. Other names for bitter melon include balsam pear, bitter cucumber, and bitter gourd.
