Sixth Annual Burmese New Year's Water Festival - New York
Drench your friends, relatives and anyone else in range at the sixth annual Burmese New Year's Water Festival! This celebration of Burmese culture -- including food, fashion, music, art and good-natured public dousings -- will be held on the splendid grounds of the Queens Botanical Garden, Sunday, July 9th, 11am to 5pm. Admission is free. Burmese delicacies such as Mohinga (lemongrass seafood soup), spicy chicken curry and Kao Swe (Asian vegetables with rich noodles) will be among many Asian dishes offered. The Thingya (meaning "renewal") Water Festival, is highlighted by the New Year's tradition where children and adults alike joyously splash friends and family with water to cleanse away last year's troubles. BRING YOUR SQUIRT GUNS - there is nothing like this! The group sponsoring the event, the Thingyan Association, a non-political, not-for-profit Burmese-American social organization based in New York City, expects over 2,000 attendees from as far away as Canada and England.
